Episode 1.6: Another Fine Navy Day

by admin on November 10, 2012

A dazed and disoriented Sam is beaten and bloody three hours after a chemical attack hit the island. He holds a syringe in his hand as he gazes around the empty village. He sees Christine in a vision. Make that a hallucination. Sam finds dozens of villagers and Colorado crew members passed out. Julian Serrat, however, is awake and loading medical supplies into his car. Sam sees that two of the SEALS, Vogler and Monk, are dead on the hospital floor. This is moments before Serrat knocks him out with a stun gun.

We jump back to 20 minutes before the chemical attack. James got a good night’s sleep after having spent the evening withTani. Later, his SEAL pal, Hopper, lunges at Marcus after an uneasy conversation about their mission in Pakistan. The captain wants a video chat with Secretary of Defense Curry, but Nigel is in a particularly feisty mood. He plops a picture of Christine Kendal being held close by Paul Wells on the video screen. Sam is flustered. As for Nigel, he loses it completely loses it when he trashes a bank of electronic equipment. So much for the video feed.

Tani nearly steps off a cliff when she thinks she sees her dead mother. James looks out to see a Black Ops team streaking towards the island in a Zodiac boat. Not good. Back inside the Early Warning Station, Prosser realizes that the reason everyone is acting loopy is because they’ve been dosed with a nasty drug nicknamed “The Buzz” by the military. It causes delusions, poor judgment, paranoia, hallucinations and, ultimately, unconsciousness. On the bright side, it lasts only eight hours and it doesn’t kill you.

The search is on for Epinephrine shots to snap folks out of their haze. Marcus, Grace and Prosser take the Colorado out with a skeleton crew to keep it safe. Unfortunately, someone has swiped all the Epi shots onboard. The crew is dropping like flies. The bad news continues when a fire breaks out in the Oxygen Generator Room. A woozy Grace takes the Conn while an equally-unsteady Marcus heads below. Along the way, he sees visions of his son, Jeffrey, running through the sub. Meanwhile, the oxygen tanks are down. Soon all air in the sub will be gone

We jump ahead to three hours after the chemical attack. Sam teams with James to hunt down Serrat, who is hanging with the Black Ops. They are trying to revive Sophie to reestablish communications. The Ops team has Hopper tied up. Their leader is a trained killer named Booth. Sam has seen this guy before. About an hour after the attack, he passed himself off as a member of the Colorado crew. He was fixing up the broken arm Hopper gave him when the snatched him. Sam figures out that the guy is a fraud. The brawl that ensued after this realization explains the bloody wounds later seen on each man’s face.

In present time, Booth orders Sophie downstairs to reset the power for the antenna. He lets Serrat know that she’s dead as soon as the job is done. Sam and James quickly take out the Black Ops team. They do so with the help of Serrat, who shoots Booth before the guy can kill Sam. A deal was made to drug everyone so that the Ops team could recover James and Hopper. Serrat played ball with them so he could get his island back.

On the Colorado, a fading Prosser tells the captain that he needs to turn the oxygen back on. Unfortunately, Marcus can only sit in a corner. He’s telling a story to the hallucination image of his young son. Then he passes out. A short time later, Marcus awakens with an Epi syringe sticking out of his chest. Someone has turned the air back on. But who? Marcus heads back to the Conn as the oxygen levels rise. He lets Sam know that they’ll return to the island once the rest of the crew awakens.

Hopper lets James know that he received a change in orders regarding their mission in Pakistan. They were to eliminate the man they were initially sent in to save. Elsewhere, Marcus lets Sam know that someone on their crew may have helped set up the chemical attack. It may be the same person who stole the captain’s firing key while he was unconscious. Without that key, the Colorado has no nuclear launch capabilities. They are completely defenseless. Marcus and Sam need to find that key ASAP.

Sam saw visions of Christine in the hours after the attack. He doesn’t remember much of what went down while he was in his woozy state. He shared a passionate kiss with his vision of Christine, who wanted to know what he was doing. It seems like an odd thing for a wife to ask her husband, even in a dream. That’s because the person who asked Sam the question in reality was Sophie. She watches the scene play out in a video that was recorded by a security camera. Sophie is clearly unnerved by this, perhaps because she didn’t resist Sam’s kiss.

Episode 1.5: Skeleton Crew

by admin on October 18, 2012

Marcus and Sam engage in a mock debate. They are prepping for a face-to-face negotiation with William Curry. The Secretary of Defense motors up to the island aboard one of three Zodiac boats. A dozen heavily-armed MPs serve as an escort. Curry is joined by White House advisor Amanda Straugh. Admiral Shepard is also part of the group. Marcus believes the government sent him because he’s an old friend. As for Shepard, he likely wants to see his daughter. Unfortunately, Grace is busy at the moment.

Sophie reveals that there’s a dead battery in a spot along the sonar array line, which is what keeps submarines from sneaking up on the island. A repair needs to be made 300 feet below the surface of the water. Grace is in command of the Colorado as it heads out to make the fix. She’s working with a skeleton crew and the best diver they have available. That would be James. The mission is even more challenging thanks to Master Chief Prosser, who still refuses to give Grace any respect whatsoever.

Not a single member of the Colorado crew takes the Defense Secretary’s offer to step away from their captain’s command. Marcus loses his cool when Curry mentions his son’s name. Guess that earlier mock debate didn’t quite take. The negations ultimately continue even though White House advisor Straugh realizes the Illinois is close to finding the gap in the sonar array line. James must use a drill to change the battery down there. The Illinois will be able to find them the moment he flips the switch.

Marcus wants a public trial. He’s willing to discuss the six Navy SEALS he picked up off the coast of Pakistan only after these terms are accepted. Curry delays his response. He’s stalling until the Illinois gets a lock on the Colorado. Grace must dive the sub to avoid them. That means leaving her diver behind. James cuts his tether as his ride heads down to dangerously low depths. He continues with his mission to change the battery even though he’ll likely not be able to survive once the job is done.

Admiral Shepard lets Marcus know that he’s assembling a group at home that can take over the current U.S. government and expose the lies. The negotiations pick up again. Marcus claims he has evidence of the whole sordid mess of deception from his Navy SEAL pals. This newsflash has Curry making a very reasonable offer that is promptly declined. A better offer is made, but this time it’s for Sam. All he has to do is turn over Marcus. They have a deal. As it turns out, it’s one Marcus wanted all along. He’s going down, but his crew will be saved.

The Colorado goes silent as it is surrounded. Grace knows that if they move they’re dead. She gives the order to ready the torpedo tubes. She’s hoping the other subs will back off once they show them their teeth. Grace makes a stirring speech to let the crew know that’s she’s betting on them as they head into harm’s way. The Illinois acquires a firing solution on the Colorado. This means the offer for Sam is off the table. Curry tells Straugh to give the order to destroy the sub. Then…

BANG! BANG! BANG! Admiral Shepard shoots Straugh dead before the order to blow up the Colorado can be authenticated. Curry is hit in the leg before the MPs finally subdue Shepard. On the Colorado, Grace orders torpedoes fired into an underground volcano. On land, Curry completes the order to fire on the Colorado. KABOOM! Torpedoes explode on the volcano. The Colorado is able to get lost in the debris and avoid incoming torpedoes. Grace lets the outside world they have four nukes currently aimed at DC. She orders all forces away from the 200-mile perimeter and thanks them for their cooperation.

The Colorado has survived the day, but the crew fears James has not. The clock on his air supply has run out. The search is on, but there is no sign of life. Prosser tells Grace a story in which the message is to never underestimate a Navy SEAL. DINK, DINK, DINK. The tapping sounds heard outside the sub is James sending a Morse code message. He needs a ride home. Grace is happy to oblige. She’s also moved by the salutes she receives from the crew. It’s a simple gesture of respect that’s led by the COB.

Paul Wells shows Christine Kendal a series of emails detailing how Sam and Marcus were planning to sell the Colorado and defect to China. It’s a tough pill to swallow. Of course, the delicious meal Paul makes for Christine goes down very easy. These two “appear” to be bonding big time. Christine later has a “genuine” bonding chat with Kylie Sinclair, who has become persona non grata around DC. Christine now knows Paul Wells is a spy because there’s only one thing Sam loves more than her. That would be his country.

On the island of Sainte Marina, Marcus lets Sam know that everything that went down there today never happened. At least, that’s what the U.S. government will say if asked. The truth, however, must still come out to Grace as Marcus informs her about what happened with her father. As for James, he returns to share a kiss with Tani while Sam shares some coffee with Sophie. As for Marcus, he stands alone in his quarters gazing down at photos of the family he once had.

Episode 1.4: Voluntold

by admin on October 18, 2012

Grace holds her own as she takes the Conn during an intense battle drill. The crew, however, needs to improve its time. There’s dissention in the ranks. The COB still has the respect of his men, but many have lost faith in Marcus and Sam. The captain and XO have been officially indicted for acts of treason and terrorism against the United States. Prosser assures Grace that he’ll be more than ready to paddle her, Marcus and Sam right up to their trial in Washington.

Anders, the senior nuke-rated chief on the Colorado, breaks protocol by waiting for the captain in his quarters. He wants to go home. Marcus believes they should let the crew decide if they want to stay or go. Sam’s not sure that’s a good idea. He wants Cortez to persuade the female recruits to stay so the men will think twice before jumping ship. Speaking of Cortez, she and Brannan tell inaccurate stories as to what went down while they were held captive after Redman’s body is found dead on the shore.

BANG! BANG! BANG! Shots are fired on the captain as he walks through town. Sam chases down the gunman, Wallace, who is one of five sailors that were contacted by Secretary of Defense Curry. They were ordered to terminate the captain’s command by using lethal force if necessary. Marcus doesn’t want any of the men disciplined even though his life may be in danger. He wants to prepare for another drill. Marcus will board the Colorado with his crew, just as he always does.

Marcus is impressed with the results of the latest torpedo attack scenario drill. The celebration is short-lived once Brannan enters the Conn holding a live grenade. The guy is coming unspooled as he takes control of the Colorado. Marcus clears the Conn so he can find out what’s going through this young man’s mind. He explains his actions while the entire crew listens in over the sub’s speaker system. Brannan eventually fesses up about the guilt he feels over Redman.

Sam, Prosser and others storm the Conn. Marcus orders them to stand down until Brannan can speak with the Secretary of Defense, who gives the order to blow up the sub. This is an order the scared sailor just cannot follow, much like the one Marcus disobeyed not so long ago. Cortez tells the captain what really went down with Serrat. A short time later, many of the sailors switch their names from the “go” side of the volunteer board to the “stay” side having been inspired by their captain. Anders notices that his name has been switched for him. His nuke expertise makes this unhappy sailor invaluable to the cause.

SEAL Barry Hopper is struggling to survive his injuries in the hospital, which has been robbed of all its morphine. Grace wants to know why the Illinois tried to blow them up a half hour after they picked up this guy and his pals. There has to be a connection to the SEAL team and the nuclear strike on Pakistan. James is in no mood to answer her questions. He’s more interested in getting morphine for his friend. That’s why he pays a visit to the man he knows has the goods: Julian Serrat.

Speaking of Julian, he is looking to capitalize on the valuable rare earth minerals that may exist on the island. He wants Sophieto continue the search for these minerals now that her geologist boyfriend has fled before paying back the debt he accrued during prior testing. Sophie says her tests indicate there are no valuable minerals to be found. She’s lying. Serrat menacingly orders her to keep looking.

James asks an ailing Hopper about the “changed” orders they got back in Pakistan. He wants to know why they killed an unnamed individual. The morphine kicks in before he can get any real answers. James gets into a brawl with two of his SEAL pals when they want to take Hopper off the island with a boat they’ve acquired. Tani treats his bruises and kisses him on the lips once he falls asleep. James later buries the friend he’s been storing in her freezer since it appears they will be remaining on the island for awhile now.

Christine Kendal is dealing with a slew of issues back home. There’s an aggressive press corps camped outside her home. The government has cut off her husband’s pay, so she has no income. Paul Wells, the lawyer we first met in “Blue on Blue,” gives her a few hundred bucks to help her get by. Still, Christine is coming unhinged. That’s why she takes a baseball bat to the white van that’s been parked outside her place after seeing the word “traitor” painted on her garage door. She screams at the press. Christine says that she is a U.S. citizen who will not be silenced. She wants the truth to come out.

Kylie Sinclair learns that her dad is the one who got the man she was sleeping with to steal the hard drive with all the data for the Perseus prototype. Her father, we’ll just call him Sinclair, says he turned it over to the government to protect their family’s future. Kylie meets with Admiral Shepard to let him know that the stolen hard drive will show the Colorado’s location before the attack. This is information the government wants to keep hidden.

Sam goes for a swim in the ocean. He sees Sophie standing on the shore. She leads him up to an extremely beautiful spot on the island. Sophie lets Sam that since he is now the power on the island, he also has a responsibility to it. She says there are things here that are worth more than he could possibly imagine. Sophie leaves Sam alone to wonder just what those things are.

Episode 1.3: Eight Bells

by admin on October 18, 2012

BANG! BANG! BANG! Sam fires shots in the air to break up a fight between a few of the locals and his sailors after one steals a banana. The thief is tossed in the brig with Prosser. Marcus knows he needs the COB’s help to find Redman, who has joined sailors Brannan and Cortez on the list of missing crew members. Prosser gives his word that he’ll stay in line until he gets the chance to tell his story at a court martial. Marcus gives the order to release the COB.

Julian is ready to kill one of his captives until Cortez persuades him to spend some alone time with her instead. Sophie delays an island escape with her beau to arrange a meeting between Marcus and Julian, who is ticked that a young boy was killed during the firefight that took place in “Blue on Blue.” These two leaders each desire something. Julian wants Marcus to bring him the valuable cargo that sits on a boat resting outside the military blockade currently surrounding the island. The missing sailors will be returned if this is done by dawn. Marcus has nine hours.

White House Senior Advisor Amanda Straugh has been named negotiator to the crew of the Colorado. She lets Marcus know that his son will not receive a proper burial until he surrenders. The captain puts his feelings about this situation on hold as the Colorado heads out to sea to retrieve Julian’s cargo. The Perseus is activated so the sub can sneak past the blockade. There are some tense moments when the prototype goes offline momentarily, but the cargo is ultimately loaded without a hitch.

The Perseus is eating up power on the Colorado. Marcus gives the order to shut it down. They’ll have to return to the island the old-fashioned way by running silent past the blockade. Marcus takes the ship down to dangerous depths to avoid two approaching destroyers as they pass directly above them. Depth charges are in the water. More destroyers are headed their way. Marcus gives the “all stop” order as the ships blow right past them. Time to go back to the beach.

CLANG! A young crewman drops his flashlight. The noise is enough for a destroyer to get sonar lock on the Colorado’s position. Marcus orders the sub to head towards an underwater canyon. Their pursuers would be crazy to follow them, as there isn’t much clearance. Sophie relinquishes any chance of leaving the island with her beau by heading back to the NATO command center to assist Grace. She’s the only one who can help navigate the sub through the canyon walls.

Sophie wants Sam to give her one sonar ping so she can get some bearings. She instructs him where to turn and when. There’s not much room in the canyon, but they are almost there. Sam and Sophie work in perfect harmony as the Colorado makes its way through to the other side. These two seem to be forming a special bond. The sub rises out of the water. Unfortunately, the sun also rises. Julian’s deadline has come and gone.

Julian wants Cortez to choose which one of them will die. She can’t do it. Brannan, on the other hand, offers up Redman. BANG! BANG! BANG! Red is dead. A short time later, Marcus arrives with Julian’s cargo. Cortez and Brannan are returned to their captain, who somehow manages to contain his rage even though Julian has executed a member of his crew. Sam and Prosser don’t agree on much, but they are both more than ready to avenge Redman’s death. Marcus says they will respond to what happened at a time and place of his choosing.

James heads down river with Tani where he meets her family for a traditional island dinner. He witnesses a war of words between father and daughter once Tani learns that her brother has decided to take part in a ritual that will keep him on the island. James follows her into the woods where she’s visiting her mother’s grave. Tani says her father refused to leave the island even when her mom was sick. She could have been saved if they had gone back to Australia.

Tani and James head deeper into the woods to the place where her brother will one day take part in his ritual. It involves jumping into a stream at the bottom of a beautiful waterfall. Tani takes the plunge. James is right behind her. This is a place where her mother used to take her. It was their little secret, as it was only supposed to be for boys. James moves closer to Tani, who swims away warning that they have a long walk back.

Kylie Sinclair gives Admiral Shepard the file number of the fire order that was sent to the Colorado via the secondary Antarctic network. She then asks her boyfriend, Robert, to get a timestamp on the fire order. A short time later, Robert is visited by an intimidating mystery man. Back home, Kylie exits her shower to discover that her wall safe is open. It’s filled with stacks of cash to replace what’s been taken. Someone has stolen the only hard drive with all of the tech data for the Perseus prototype. We learn that the mystery man who paid such an ominous visit to Robert is, in fact, Kylie’s father.

Cortez only half-tells Marcus what went down at Julian’s place. They share a drink at Tani’s bar as a funeral procession for the young boy who was killed makes its way through town. Julian is front and center amongst the island people as he locks eyes with Marcus. Sam assures his captain that they will get home to bury his son. There will be 21 guns at Arlington. They’ll eventually and ultimately do what is right.
